January Club Nights 2025

January 2025 has arrived! A new year, and a time to consider what you want to achieve in 2025 as a runner. Maybe January is a great time to think about going out of your comfort zone and trying something new? Perhaps you want to focus on speed or maybe see if you can increase your distance? What about giving trail running a try? Whatever you decide, you know you have the support of your Wreake family to help you achieve your goals!

January this year also sees the continuing of the Derby Cross Country League, (https://derbyrunnerxc.co.uk/ )and this is where I want to draw EVERYONES attention this month! If you missed the AGM in November, you will have missed hearing that the turnout and Wreake representation for these races, has not been high. As you are aware, if we don’t have at least 8 men and 4 ladies we don’t score any points. The Cross Country Captains – Mark Bush and Mark Jelly, arrive early and set up, leave after everyone else, attend meetings, submit all the times and generally do a lot of work to ensure we have an inclusive and fun day. I know that it means giving up half a Sunday, but due to the adverse weather, there are now 5 races left this season! Two each in January and February and one in March. That means YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE! You DON’T have to be fast, you just have to TURN UP! I for one, just use it as a lovely run through the countryside on a Sunday morning for a few miles and then stuff my face! The costs are minimal to run the race, and you just pay on the day – so no worries about loosing your hard earned cash as there is no signing up before! SO…….COME ON DOWN YOUR CLUB NEEDS YOU NOW! DON’T MISS OUT ON ANY MORE FUN! I know that we togther we can ensure we remain a strong contingency if we all just do a little bit!

2025….will it be your year? Will it be a year to remember? We are so fortunate at Wreake to have a vast amount of experience and talent. So if you are looking to try something different, or need a little encouragement – look no further! Just reach out on the forum, and there will be plenty of help and advice should you need it. Don’t forget that the Wreake Runners What’s App group will from time to time communicate important information. So if you haven’t joined, just let one of the committee members know and you can be added.

And finally, the Wreake Awards Night is in February – keep your eyes out for information. And if you would like to nominate anyone for an award, please see the information and categories on the members area of the website.

TUES14BirstallPeople’s choice night with Lizzieroad
We are starting 2025 off with a bang and doing a people’s choice night. It’s time for a speed session with the one and only Lizzie Jones PT! If like me, your speed may have diminished from eating all the Xmas goodies, then never fear we can all suffer together! Lizzie will put us through yet another great session. Remember speed is individual and it will be YOUR speed session, so good for everyone!

Lizzie will post details nearer to the time on the forum as well as instructions on the night. This is a great post Xmas break session to ease you back into training!

The route for tonights session allows for shorter versions/cut back. We aim to complete club sessions as close to 8pm as possible. Individuals must consider if the full route is suitable or if they need to consider a shorter route, ensuring they will be back to base camp by 8pm. Running together is always preferable but not always possible. If you do return by yourself, you must let someone know and advise when you have returned safely.

Meet at Sibson Road Car Park (opposite The Aroma Spice). 15 Sibson Rd, Birstall, LE4 4DX.

Gaddesby Hill reps
roadWe know how much you love hill reps, so we thought a night at Gaddesby would be a great start for upcoming LRRL races! Join us for a tough but good session up the famous Main St/Park Hill in Gaddesby. If you have joined us before, you will know it’s a hill that will do its best to beat you! Have you got what it takes? I think you do! Just repeat the mantra – I LOVE hills and you will get to the top!

There are several options to choose, but we will warm up together and can do either a pyramid session, or fartlek or work on our downhill technique – decide on the night. And this is a great session for newer Wreakies as you are never alone and can do as little or as much as you like!

No arrival before 6.45pm
Track access just before 7pm
Finished for 8pm
Suggested Session – 400m Pairs* Reps
10 minutes warm up starting gently and building up where each 400m is slightly quicker than the previous finishing the 10 minutes warm up with your quickest 400m.
Pair up with someone of similar pace. Runner 1 does 400m at effort, Runner 2 rests, then Runner 2 runs 400m at effort whilst Runner 1 rests. Repeat so each runner has completed 5, 10 or 15 reps (so as a pair that would make 10, 20 or 30 x 400m laps – decide how many you think you can do in approx. 30/35 minutes).
10 minute gentle cool down
*Obviously you can do this session solo but pairing up offers more accountability.
But, as always, you are welcome to come along and have a run round.

roadTonight we keep it simple and local and can also use it as a Fartlek training night! We head out through Syston to Queniborough and then back along the Fosse Way. There will be plenty of landmarks to use for Fartlek training and it is nice and flat, so a steady pace will be ideal. You can always extend or cut short if needed. Keep together in groups and enjoy!

Tonight we Wreakies are on tour to Rothley to do some hill rep loops! If you have joined us before, you will know that some of these hills are in the Rothley 10k in June. So why not come down and practice a few with us! We will warm up together and then start the Garland loop – aim to do 3 to 6 (I have plotted 3 loops). Once we are done then we will recover together down to Templar Way/Woodfield Road to do another 3-6 loops!

Of course you can do more or less, so don’t worry, and then just a short cool down back to the carpark.
