February Club Nights 2025

February has arrived, and with a new month comes lots of new challenges. The race calendar really starts to pick up, and whether you are out on the trails, or road is more your style; you are not short of choices for things you can enter. The month starts with the only official fell race in Leicestershire, the Bowline (Charnwood Hills Race), where there are always a few Wreakies taking on the challenge of this running favourite. For those who enjoy the off road we have more Derby XC League and the Badger Challenge at Beacon. The Leicestershire half finishes the calendar month, which again is another good local event. All these races will give great practice leading into the start of the LRRL season in March (yes it is a bit late this year!). Whatever you choose to enter, you will make your running family proud, so good luck!
February also sees the not one but two Derby Cross Country League races (https://derbyrunnerxc.co.uk/ ). It is always a challenge, but pays dividends in being able to run around some absolutely beautiful countryside. If you missed the last race you missed out on some VERY muddy fun! Unfortunately, we didn’t have a men’s team for the last race, which means we scored NO POINTS! Please everyone, we need a team for both men and women, and we need to keep the momentum going for the last few races of the season. Once again, you just show up and give the pennies to one of the Captains and run! You don’t have to be fast, you just need to finish to get some coffee and cake. And each time, you will be cheered across the finish line by other Wreakies also covered in mud! SO…….COME ON DOWN YOUR CLUB NEEDS YOU NOW! Let us try to have two teams for both mens and ladies and show the league what tough stuff we are made of! I know we can do it, together!
The winter is the time where we try and focus on our running techniques; and whether its hill work or pace, both will keep you strong for the upcoming race season. So, coming next month we will be aiming to put some attention to improving your running. We will be incorporating this into some of the club sessions – so keep your eyes out! In the meantime, following Lizzie’s session last month, here is a bit of information on Strides. So take a look and see if you can put this into your next run. THURS | 6 | Church hall Syston | Goscote with option to Rearsby | road | So let’s see how far we can get tonight! For those speedier runners, getting out to Rearsby is your goal! For us mere mortals, a loop around East Goscote will be far enough! You can make it a bit shorter for those returning from injury or just wanting a little less mileage, by not doing the loop in Goscote. Whatever you decide, be sure to organise into groups and please stay together. https://www.plotaroute.com/route/1403522 The route for tonight’s session allows for shorter versions/cut back. We aim to complete club sessions as close to 8pm as possible. Individuals must consider if the full route is suitable or if they need to consider a shorter route, ensuring they will be back to base camp by 8pm. Running together is always preferable but not always possible. If you do return by yourself, you must let someone know and advise when you have returned safely. **Winter club night rules now apply and a headtorch and hi-vis clothing is now needed** **Meet at the Catholic church of the Divine, 63 Broad St, Syston, Leicester LE7 1GH** |

THURS | 13 | Church hall Syston | Valentines Run | road | Tonight we will be celebrating LOVE, the love of running with your Wreake family. As this is the day before Valentines day, you still have time to get in the good books with your other half! Tonight is a Capt Carmichael Strava Art route, spelling out LOVE. The route is about 5.7 miles, but we will need to have little warm up to the end of Broad St and then start from there. And the Capt will be leading us around, as he loves us so much! https://www.strava.com/routes/31830783478722134 This evenings session does not allow for a shorter version or cut back. Please ensure you are able to complete the full route and be back to camp by 8pm. *Meet at the Catholic church of the Divine, 63 Broad St, Syston, Leicester LE7 1GH* |

THURS | 20 | Birstall | Round the Roundabouts with Reb | road | Tonight is a people’s choice night with Reb! We will be challenged by Reb, who will lead us to the top roundabout at the services to the bottom and so forth. This is a great session as the incline is not steep, but long and will utilise different muscle groups. This session also can be adjusted to suit distance, so no excuses! Reb will post nearer to the time and give details on the night. Come on down! **Winter club night rules now apply and a headtorch and hi-vis clothing is now needed** *Meet at Sibson Road Car Park (opposite The Aroma Spice). 15 Sibson Rd, Birstall, LE4 4DX* |
TUES | 25 | East Goscote | *Pairs/ Paarlauf * Intervals in East Goscote | road | Tonight is a technique run session, so Paarlauf Interval training is on the cards. The aim is to practice some Intervals with a buddy off the track, and we will keep it as flat as possible in order to focus on your speed/tempo. We will meet in East Goscote at the car park at 18:45 and please use this time to have a little warm up perhaps around the car park and/or static stretching. From there in pairs, one will run one direction and the other in the opposite way, until you meet. Then turn around and retrace your steps back to where you started (e.g. the carpark). You can use the flat loop to incorporate some Intervals. The loop around the whole of Long Furrow is 1.25 miles. We will decide on the amount of time for the Paarlauf on the night. Intervals in pairs can be more challenging and running together is always a little more fun! **Winter club night rules now apply and a headtorch and hi-vis clothing is now needed** ** Village Car Park, Long Furrow, East Goscote, Leicester LE7 3ZL** |
THURS | 27 | Church hall Syston | Watermead Headtorch run | road | Will we be able to run this or not? The floods always seem to be against us, and fingers crossed tonight mother nature is being kind. So, a headtorch run to the lakes and back. The route is just over 5 miles, but can be shortened as needed. I have also put down the longer route, but again you can alter as required. If weather is not on our side, we will of course let you all know as soon as possible if we need to change the planned route for the night! https://www.plotaroute.com/route/2188000 https://www.plotaroute.com/route/2187991 **Winter club night rules now apply and a headtorch and hi-vis clothing is now needed** **Meet at the Catholic church of the Divine, 63 Broad St, Syston, Leicester LE7 1GH** |
