Well done to the 17 Wreake Runner’s who completed the John Fraser 10 mile race at the weekend. Here Club Captain Anne Timlock reflects on the race…
Sunday 4 September had been looming in my mind like a rather unwelcome dark cloud on my horizon recently…why ? It was the date of the JF10 …a 10 mile ” undulating ” road race, the last one of the summer league and for some reason I was scared of this race. The day dawned with good weather conditions apart from being a little windy and when myself and Hayden arrived at the venue we weren’t expecting a huge turnout of Wreakies for one reason or another , a lot of people seemed to be busy but people kept turning up and in the end it was a very respectable amount of club members that lined up on the start line.
The course certainly was undulating with seemingly no flat bits at all and in the breeze that had picked up to a proper windy day I found it tough going but as the miles ticked by at around 7.40 min miles I began to believe that maybe I could get a PB out of this and if I was really lucky my last Gold club standard time..in actual fact my last mile was my quickest as I pushed myself to achieve the time I needed and I finally crossed the line in a lovely flat grass finish in 1.16… a 4 min PB !!
The whole Wreake contingent seemed to rise to the occasion and run well…in particular the amazing Bruno taking the men’s V50 prize with a time of 60.48 and the equally awesome ‘Fast’ Anne Holyland the women’s title in an impressive 61.43.
The race support and photos were brilliantly supplied by Hayden who having run 20 xc miles the day before decided to wear the chicken suit and opt out of the race….no idea why….
The race was well organised apart from the slight hitch of the men’s trophy being broken and the lady’s being lost! However aside from those minor details it was a good day with decent goody bags, enthusiastic marshals and plenty of support. Definitely be returning for another go next year.
